29th May 2016 – Ranboo with Barkas

Posted on Updated on

We are delighted to be hosting Internationally Respected teacher Barkas in Glasgow this May. As part of the weekend of activities he will be teaching his unique style, Ranboo.

Ranboo is a game with the astonishment of your partner.

It is not to apply certain patterns but to apply all patterns in an empathic and conscious way. For a good Ranboo session it’s much more crucial how to shape the session dynamically. Dynamic is often misunderstood as speed, but its the spatial and temporal game with distance (ma-ai), with constantly changing the speed (Kankyuu) and last but not least with hard and soft phases of the session.

In a Ranboo session one can treat their partner like an enemy and in the next second this enemy can be the love of their life.

The crucial point is that your partner is not able to foresee what’s coming next and this is probably the most difficult thing in Ranboo: to know what to do without showing it, to take care of your partner’s safety without breaking the flow and to step back as an individual. Without controlling yourself you cannot control the session and even one single situation.

Ranboo sometimes looks like wild rage but it is empathy and devotion.

  • Date: Sunday 29th May 2016
  • Time: 1230 to 1630
  • Location: Club X, 68 Virginia St, Glasgow (Enter via Delmonicas)

28th May 2016 – Introduction to Osada-ryu with Barkas

Introduction to Osada-ryu

Osada Ryu is one of the few schools of Japanese Rope Bondage. It is in some senses comparable with schools in martial arts. The focus herein lies on the partner though and how to take care of this person. The Osada Ryu consists of a system of numberless bondage patterns on one side and on a philosophical approach on the other side. The latter one can be described as a way of how to behave in a rope scene to a beloved person. The class gives a first insight into the principles of Osada Ryu and offers a few rope techniques, which are crucial for the school.

  • The 9 gates of Osada Ryu
  • The Osada Ryu Takate Kote
  • Ipponnawa (one rope techniques)
  • Armbinder

If the class is running smoothly there may also be time to cover other topics at Barkas’ discretion

Entry level class, although knowledge of rope basics is essential!

If you need basic instruction come along to any of our “Intro to Rope” sessions and one of our tutors will let you know if you have the skills to join this class.

About Osada Ryu

Osada Steve(長田スティーブ)is recognised within the worldwide Shibari community as an undisputed Master. In his work he emphasises the spiritual and emotional connection with the model, while giving absolute priority to the model’s well-being and safety. He also emphasises discernment of the values of Japanese culture, which are embodied in the rope work.

In 1998 he met the legendary Shibari Grandmaster, the late Osada Eikichi (長田英吉), and became his deshi (disciple). He studied his style of Shibari until Osada Eikichi’s retirement in 2001, when he became his designated successor. He subsequently studied under the late Akechi Denki (明智伝鬼) , Grandmaster Yukimura Haruki (雪村春樹) , and Nawashi Kanna (縄師神凪).

About Barkas

Currently living in Vancouver, Canada, I am a bondage educator, performance artist, writer and event organizer.

I became an Osada Ryu instructor in 2011 when I opened the Shibari Dojo Vienna. Since then I am one of the 4 licenced Osada Ryu instructors of the world. In 2015 I got a „given name“ by Yukimura Haruki Sensei. Harutsuyu. This honour allows me to teach Yukimura Ryu as well. Another huge influence is the friendship with Nawashi Kanna Sensei and Kagura San, which started I co-organized their first tour outside of Japan in 2013. As a product of this high level education, I developed my own, very specific style called “Ranboo”, which is a highly dynamical and stormy way of doing and thinking Kinbaku.

I co-organized the annual Viennese Rope Festival and other events such as the “A night full of Kinbaku”. Within my work as a Kinbaku teacher and performer, I cooperate with different artists and arts institutions, such as the Zafraan ensemble, the Viennese Tanzquartier, the photographer Tom Hofmann and others.

A special focus of me is the implementation of various philosophical, sociological, physical, mathematical and historical ideas into my approach. A recent development of me is the metaphor of tying as an interview – a certain mind-set that can help to perfect one’s own style. Intellectuality and emotionality don’t contradict each other. „To fill the techniques with life and personality“. I don’t tie people, I tie with them.

Performances and Workshops all over the world, such as at Shibaricon (‘14 & ‘15) in Chicago, at Moscow knot, at Kannawa Kai in Tokyo, at West Coast Bound in Vancouver and many other events and occasions made has made me a well-known and demanded Kinbaku artist.

About Fred:

Fred_Rx began tying several years ago, when he discovered he didn’t have enough hands to restrain and hurt people with. He started out using whatever combination of Eastern and Western ties seemed most effective, but quickly learned that rope could be used for play and torture in its own right.

He has been using suspension as part of his play for many years also and has lots of tips and tricks to pass onto those beginning their journey.

10th May Open Exchange – Box Ties for Beginners

Box Tie for Beginners

aka it’s not as difficult as it looks

// //

Date & Time: Sunday, May 10, 2015 ·12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Luke & Jack

45 Virginia St, Glasgow   @ map

Cost: £5 per person
Dress code: Comfortable casual wear. No underwear or lingerie please.

Level: Beginner and up
Equipment needed: natural ropes in 8m lengths will be demonstrated. With some modification synthetic ropes can also be used. Workshop ropes will be available for new people to borrow.

The versatile workhorse of rope bondage, the box tie is the foundation of many floor work and suspension ties in both eastern and western styles. Despite its complicated appearance even beginners can tie a safe and functional box tie and understanding the building blocks of this tie is a good foundation for other styles of tie too.

Mr Knotty will lead this session and will show the basics of a 2 rope “TK” style box tie. If there’s time we might even get onto the 3rd rope.

There are no suspension points at this venue and so whilst this tie can be used for suspensions no suspension will be taught.

Twisted & Kinoko Workshop – January 2015

Posted on Updated on

STORE set off into 2015 with a bang with a 5 day intensive workshop with Mr Hajime Kinoko at the Virginia Gallery. Twisted came at the end of the week with guest performers Fred Hatt & Miss Bones, Wkyd Dave and Clover and Kinoko with Skinnyredhead. We took the feedback from the last Twisted and set out to collaborate with our new venue, Club X, whilst keeping all the things we liked about The Virginia Gallery who still hosted our week of workshops.

FredHatt&MsBones_3385_webThe first act of the night was Fred Hatt & Miss Bones. This dynamic duo have a palpable connection and loving nature contrasting with the harshness of the ties. Fred, originally from Glasgow, may well be the first ever person to perform kinbaku on stage in a kilt and there were lots of other little tartan mementos included in their performance. Who knew a Japanese art could be so Scottish too!

Fred and Bones are also keenly involved in Pop Up Rope Events (PuRE) in London which organises all kinds of rope events from workshops on how to tie, life drawing classes and circus style aerial arts training. At STORE we’re looking forward to collaborating in the future with PuRE. There is also the blog www.bonesandrope.com which shares some interesting insights.

Wykd_Dave&Clover_3409_webNext up was Wykd Dave and Clover who many of you remember performed for us at the first ever Twisted. They were so good we wanted to bring them back again! We were not disappointed. It’s not often on stage that you get to see a reverse prayer tie so strictly applied and used for an elaborate and challenging suspension. Clover’s grace blends perfectly with Wykd Dave’s loving sadism.

Wykd Dave and Clover travel nationally and internationally to lots of rope events. If you haven’t been able to see their show, or better yet attend a class with them, then we heartily recommend that you give them a try! Check out all the details on http://rope-topia.com/

Kinoko&Skinny_3587_webLast onto the stage were Kinoko-san and SkinnyRedHead. Being the organiser of this event I know that these two had never met before the workshops started and had never performed together. You would not have been able to tell from this performance! Skinny’s proud strength in Kinoko-san’s torturous ties was infused with deep emotions which had the audience in stunned silence and then rapturous applause. Many of us had seen the joking and lighthearted side of Kinoko-san during the workshops and the transformation he undergoes on stage is phenomenal. This was far and away the most powerful piece of performance I have ever witnessed.

Kinoko-san continues on a world tour for the next few weeks. He is also due to perform at Torture Garden’s Valentines event. His website is www.shibari.jp

Skinny is available as a model and creative and can be contacted via her website – www.skinny-art.com

Personal Thanks From Organiser, Jin

Describing the last week of my life using simply words is not possible. It has been a journey of emotion, new connections, friendship and love.

Many thanks to 秀土平松 / Mr Kinoko Hajime for leading the week’s workshop. He is not just a skilled performer but an intuitive and creative teacher also. Absolutely everyone in the class received tailored attention and encouragement. He is also a wonderful house guest and is always full of smiles and joy and unexpected moments of hilarity. I feel as though I have gained a good friend rather than simply accommodated a tutor.

Skinny was an absolutely astounding model for Kinoko-san but not only that spent much of the workshop going round everyone making sure they got to see the details of the tie up close. She also helped each of the people being tied understand what it should feel like. She’s also pretty good at floor cleaning and rounding up coffee cups! To say that her performance with Kinoko-san was mesmerising feels a little cliched but I simply cannot find the words to describe it. The strong connection between these two was wonderful to watch and off stage there was such a lovely warmth also

Thank you to Ian & Drew of Luke & Jack with the ever helpful Cameron for hosting the workshops and helping make all the vital connections that were needed to make both the workshop and Twisted a runaway success

Thank you to Darren and his team at Club X for being so friendly and easy to work with for Twisted. It was a joy to organise all the events with such helpful people. Thanks also go to Darren for helping to avert a near tour stopping crisis and to the lovely honest patrons of Delmonica’s who ensured that a certain person’s mislaid bag and passport were safely stored away.

Thank you to Dave Wykd, Clover, Fred & Anna for travelling all the way to us in Scotland to be part of Twisted and to help make the best show I’ve ever had the pleasure to see. Yes, as the organiser I’m biased…. but I really mean it! Such passion and skill went into all the acts on stage that it is humbling that you all agreed to share with us.

Thanks to Osaka Dan for organising the whole tour. It has been worth all your hard work and the week we have had was just perfect. Thank you for convincing me to go for the 5 day workshop!

She isn’t online, but the lovely Nana needs a mention as the best damned interpreter we could have asked for as well as excellent company both at the workshop and at home. You would hardly believe that it isn’t really her profession and she helped to navigate a few critical cultural and communication hiccups with ease and no stress.

Also in the background has been Telarian who has been husband extraordinaire, master frame designer and builder for STORE. Without him none of it would have happened. My own bunny for the workshop was an absolute trooper and as fun as ever to work with.

Huge thanks to Iongantas for the photography at Twisted and to Alice Gordon for the video footage.

And thank you to everyone who came along. The workshop would have been nothing without the dynamic of this group. There was so much sharing and laughing in this class but without ever becoming silly. I haven’t tagged any of you so that you can choose for yourself how you can be found. Please do tag yourself or message me if we are not already friends. I would love to stay in touch with every last one of you.

So yeah. Wow!
